Coco Gauff exited Wimbledon in the fourth round once again, falling to Emma Navarro 6-4, 6-3 in an all-American match on Sunday.
This loss adds to a series of early departures by top-seeded women at this year’s All England Club: No. 1 Iga Swiatek lost on Saturday, No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka withdrew before her first match, and No. 6 Marketa Vondrousova was ousted in the first round.
Only two of the top 10 seeds remain: 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, ranked No. 4, and recent French Open runner-up Jasmine Paolini, ranked No. 7.
The No. 2-seeded Gauff, 20, from Florida, is the reigning U.S. Open champion. She has been the runner-up at the French Open and reached the semifinals at the Australian Open. Her breakthrough came at Wimbledon at age 15 when she became the youngest qualifier in tournament history and defeated Venus Williams in the first round, reaching the fourth round. However, she has not advanced beyond that stage since, exiting in the fourth round in 2021, the third round in 2022, and the first round last year.
Navarro, seeded 19th and a 23-year-old from South Carolina, reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. She previously showcased her potential in the second round by defeating four-time major champion Naomi Osaka.
On Sunday, Gauff struggled with consistency, recording 25 unforced errors compared to 12 winners. She frequently looked toward her guest box at Centre Court, where one of her coaches, Brad Gilbert, stood with his hands on his hips.
