Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s planned announcement of the European Championship squad has been pre-empted by various unconventional sources, including bakers, entertainers, and art venues.
In a unique twist, the Frankfurter Kunsthalle art exhibition venue revealed the inclusion of injured Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sané, bringing the total number of confirmed players to nine before Nagelsmann’s official announcement.
Further leaks included Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Füllkrug revealed on a radio program, Stuttgart winger Chris Führich disclosed by a Black Forest bakery, and Eintracht Frankfurt defender Robin Koch and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz confirmed by YouTube entertainers.
The leaks continued as Stuttgart defender Maximilian Mittelstädt’s selection was unveiled by singer Peter Schilling on Instagram, commemorating Mittelstädt’s recent goal for Germany with Schilling’s 1980s hit “Major Tom,” which garnered significant fan support.
The confirmed selections exclude Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka and Mats Hummels, despite their impressive performances towards the end of the season, including Hummels’ influential role in helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final.
Sané, though suspended for Germany’s upcoming warm-up match against Ukraine on June 3, will be available for the final tune-up game against Greece in Mönchengladbach four days later.
Host nation Germany is set to kick off Euro 2024 against Scotland in Munich on June 14, followed by matches against Hungary in Stuttgart on June 19 and Switzerland in Frankfurt on June 23.
