In a riveting showdown at the San Siro stadium, Inter Milan emerged victorious over city rivals AC Milan on Monday, clinching their 20th Serie A title in a historic fashion.
Goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram paved the path to victory for Inter, securing a crucial 2-1 win over AC Milan. Although Fikayo Tomori pulled one back for AC Milan in the 80th minute, Inter held on for the win that stretched its lead to an insurmountable 17 points over second.
Inter’s captain, Lautaro Martínez, expressed the significance of the moment, stating, “We find ourselves in a situation that’s never happened before. We needed to take advantage of this opportunity, because look around, the entire stadium is ours now.”
After the final whistle, jubilant scenes unfolded as Inter players celebrated with their fans. A banner was unfurled, saying in Italian: “Repeat it to the Madonnina, who are the champions and who the crybabies.”
Simone Inzaghi, in his debut season as Inter’s coach, savored his maiden league title triumph, remarking, “Winning the league with five matches left — more or less won with nine matches left, today making it mathematically certain — in a derby, with Milan the home team, that is something that will remain with us”
Inter’s journey to the title was marked by a dominant campaign, characterized by a potent attack led by Lautaro Martínez and supported by Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu. The defensive solidity anchored by Pavard, Bastoni, and de Vrij proved instrumental in thwarting opponents.
The match itself was a spectacle of football prowess, with Inter’s Acerbi and Thuram finding the net to establish a commanding lead. Milan fought back valiantly, with Tomori’s late goal setting up a nerve-wracking finale.
It was a fierce game, and even though it was raining, it could not dampen their passion for football. In the end, Inter Milan won the championship with concerted efforts. A scuffle broke out in stoppage time, with Milan’s Theo Hernandez and Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries sent off. Five minutes later, Calabria were also shown a red card after another melee.
With this triumph, Inter surpasses Milan in Italian league titles, firmly establishing their place among the Serie A giants. Juventus leads the tally with 36 championship wins.
