Scottie Scheffler clinched the Olympic gold medal with a record-tying performance at Le Golf National, shooting a 9-under 62 on Sunday. Scheffler finished 19-under for the tournament.
Tommy Fleetwood of Great Britain secured the silver medal, finishing one stroke behind Scheffler. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama took the bronze, having previously lost the bronze medal in a seven-man playoff at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Scheffler’s 29 on the back nine marked his first of the season. The World No. 1 golfer added Olympic gold to a season that already included six PGA TOUR victories, including the Masters.
Jon Rahm, who co-led entering the final round, was ahead by four strokes through 10 holes. However, consecutive bogeys on the next two holes and Fleetwood’s birdies erased his lead. Rahm then double-bogeyed the par-5 14th, falling out of medal contention.
As Rahm’s lead dwindled, Scheffler surged up the leaderboard with three consecutive birdies from holes 14-16. He took the outright lead on 17 and secured it after Fleetwood bogeyed the par-4 17th.
Rahm ended the final round with four bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine.
Defending Olympic champion Xander Schauffele dropped to T-9 after starting the day co-leading with Rahm.
Victor Perez thrilled the home crowd, carding under par on holes 12-16, including an eagle on the par-5 14th. He finished with an 8-under 63, one stroke shy of the course record.
Rory McIlroy moved into medal contention with five consecutive birdies on the back nine. However, a double-bogey on hole 15 ended his charge.
Tom Kim birdied four of the first eight holes in the final round but couldn’t maintain the momentum on the back nine, ending with a double-bogey, his first of the competition. A medal would have exempted him from South Korea’s mandatory military service. Kim can still earn an exemption with a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games or a podium finish at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Corey Conners shot a 5-under 66, his best round of the tournament, finishing T-9. This marks the best finish for a Canadian in men’s golf since the sport’s return to the Olympics in 2016.
