Tadej Pogacar, the winner of this year’s Tour de France, has withdrawn from the Olympic Games citing “extreme fatigue,” according to the Slovenian Olympic Committee.
Pogacar secured victory in the Tour de France by winning Sunday’s final stage, a time trial, completing the prestigious 3,498km race for the third time.
The Olympic Games are set to commence in Paris on Friday, and the 25-year-old was slated to compete in the road race on 3 August.
“Unfortunately Tadej Pogacar has cancelled his participation because of a state of extreme fatigue,” stated Slovenia’s Olympic cycling coach Uros Murn.
In addition to his 2024 Tour win, Pogacar triumphed in the Giro d’Italia in May, making him the first cyclist to win both major races in the same year since Italian Marco Pantani achieved the feat in 1998.
