Alex Ovechkin continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record, but on Tuesday night, he reached another significant milestone in his illustrious career. The Washington Capitals captain recorded his 700th career assist during a game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Ovechkin earned the milestone assist in the second period, delivering a precise centering pass that set up Aliaksei Protas for a goal. Earlier in the game, Ovechkin had recorded a secondary assist on Tom Wilson’s tally, bringing his total for the night to two.
With this achievement, Ovechkin becomes only the sixth player in NHL history to have both 700 goals and 700 assists. The exclusive group includes Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jaromir Jagr, Marcel Dionne, and Phil Esposito.
Ovechkin, currently sitting 41 goals behind Gretzky for the all-time scoring record, continues to close in on one of hockey’s most prestigious records.
