Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane will miss the start of the 2024-25 season after undergoing sports hernia surgery earlier this week, as reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
While there is no exact timeline for his recovery, Friedman notes that Kane is expected to be sidelined until January or February. At the opening of Edmonton’s training camp on Wednesday, Kane informed reporters that he is addressing hip, abdominal, and hernia injuries that he played through for much of the previous season.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman confirmed that Kane will not start the season on long-term injured reserve despite his extended absence. Kane, who has two years left on his current contract, carries a cap hit of $5.125 million.
Last season, Kane recorded 24 goals and 20 assists in 77 regular-season games and contributed eight points in 20 playoff games as the Oilers advanced to the Stanley Cup Final.
This marks the 33-year-old’s fourth season with the Oilers, following previous tenures with the San Jose Sharks, Buffalo Sabres, and the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers organization.
The Oilers will kick off their 2024-25 campaign against the Jets on October 9.
