The Vancouver Canucks have added to their offseason roster by signing forward Daniel Sprong to a one-year contract worth $975,000, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The team announced the deal on Saturday.
Sprong, 27, was an unrestricted free agent after completing a one-year, $2-million contract with the Detroit Red Wings, signed on July 1, 2023. During the 2023-24 season, he scored 18 goals and matched his career-high assist total of 25 while averaging 12 minutes of ice time across 76 games with the Red Wings.
This marks Sprong’s sixth team in nine NHL seasons. He recorded a personal best of 21 goals with the Seattle Kraken in the 2022-23 season. He has also achieved 14 goals in three different seasons and 13 goals in another.
Sprong was the highest-scoring forward remaining in the unrestricted free agent pool.
The Canucks have been active this offseason. On July 1, they signed 27-year-old forward Jake DeBrusk to a seven-year, $38.5-million contract. They also secured two-year deals with forwards Danton Heinen and Kiefer Sherwood, and defenseman Vincent Desharnais on the same day.
Additionally, the Canucks re-signed restricted free-agent goaltender Artus Silovs to a two-year contract on Tuesday. Earlier in the offseason, they retained players like Dakota Joshua with a four-year contract and Tyler Myers with a three-year deal on June 27. On June 26, Vancouver traded forwards Ilya Mikheyev and Sam Lafferty to the Chicago Blackhawks and re-signed Teddy Blueger for two more seasons.
The Canucks’ most significant deal this offseason was an eight-year, $58-million contract extension for top-pairing defenseman Filip Hronek, signed on June 18.
