San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has traveled to Germany to consult a specialist about his Achilles tendinitis, as reported by head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday through ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.
Shanahan stated that McCaffrey is expected to spend several days in Germany to seek treatment for the injury. Two weeks ago, the 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve, and he is anticipated to miss at least six games.
Prior to the season opener, McCaffrey was listed as inactive for the game against the New York Jets, having been designated as questionable earlier.
The 2023 Offensive Player of the Year is not alone in facing injury challenges, as several 49ers players are also dealing with health issues. Deebo Samuel is expected to miss the Week 4 matchup against the New England Patriots, and George Kittle was unavailable on Sunday due to a hamstring injury.
Additionally, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave is out for the season following a torn triceps injury, while quarterback Brock Purdy is considered day-to-day due to back soreness.
In McCaffrey’s absence, Jordan Mason has stepped up, amassing 324 rushing yards and scoring two touchdowns. Since joining the 49ers in 2022, the 28-year-old McCaffrey has recorded 2,205 rushing yards and a total of 31 touchdowns in 27 games.
