The New England Patriots have released wide receiver Jalen Reagor from their practice squad as of Tuesday. The move came shortly after Reagor posted a cryptic message on social media that appeared to express dissatisfaction with his situation in New England.
Reagor, a former first-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, had signed a one-year, $1.3 million extension with the Patriots in March. This extension included $442,500 in guaranteed money. Reagor had previously served as a backup wide receiver and kick returner for New England during the 2023 season.
Following the preseason, Reagor did not make the 53-man roster but re-signed with the Patriots’ practice squad in August. He was inactive for the first two games of the season.
On Tuesday, Reagor shared a meme on Instagram depicting a Bugatti parked in a trailer park. The post, which lacked any accompanying commentary, seemed to imply a comparison between Reagor and the high-end car, with the Patriots represented as the surrounding trailer park. The Patriots’ reaction to the post was swift, and Reagor was released hours later. The team issued a brief statement confirming the transaction but did not provide additional comments.
After his release, Reagor removed the meme from his Instagram account and deleted all other content, leaving only the word “athlete” on his profile. As of Tuesday afternoon, Reagor’s Instagram account, which had over 100,000 followers, showed no posts or stories.
Reagor’s career has been marked by disappointment since he was selected 21st overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Eagles, one pick before the Minnesota Vikings selected Justin Jefferson. In his rookie season, Reagor recorded 31 catches for 396 yards and one touchdown. In his second season, he had 57 receptions for 299 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles traded Reagor to the Vikings in the 2022 offseason for a seventh-round draft pick and a conditional fourth-round pick, which became a fifth-rounder due to unmet performance conditions. In Minnesota, Reagor caught eight passes for 107 yards over 17 games. The Vikings released him after the 2023 training camp, leading to his signing with the Patriots’ practice squad.
During his time with New England, Reagor appeared in 11 games and registered seven catches for 138 yards. He also contributed significantly on special teams, with seven kick returns averaging 31.6 yards each, including a 98-yard touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.
Despite his contributions, Reagor’s performance was not sufficient to secure a permanent spot on the Patriots’ roster, and he is now seeking a new opportunity.
