The San Francisco 49ers have announced that running back Christian McCaffrey will be inactive for Monday’s game against the New York Jets.
McCaffrey sustained injuries during training camp and missed four weeks of practice, only returning to the field last week. Despite being listed as questionable with calf and Achilles issues, McCaffrey had expressed optimism about his availability for the season opener, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
With McCaffrey out, the 49ers are expected to rely on running backs Jordan Mason, Patrick Taylor, and Isaac Guerendo for the Monday night matchup.
In the 2023 season, McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,469 rushing yards and scored 14 touchdowns. He also recorded 67 receptions for 564 yards, securing the title of Offensive Player of the Year. Over the course of his career, McCaffrey has accumulated 6,185 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns in 91 games since being drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the first round in 2017.
Additionally, All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, who missed most of training camp while negotiating a new contract, has been added to the 49ers’ 53-man roster ahead of the game.
