Patrick Mahomes etched his name into Kansas City Chiefs history during Thursday’s 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens, surpassing Len Dawson as the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards.
Entering the season opener just 83 yards behind Dawson, who amassed 28,507 yards over 183 games with the Chiefs, Mahomes set the new record in his 97th regular-season appearance.
The milestone was achieved on a play where Mahomes evaded a sack to convert a third-and-12 situation, completing a 23-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce. Although the drive did not culminate in a touchdown, the Chiefs, the reigning Super Bowl champions, secured a 31-yard field goal.
Mahomes is on track to also become the Chiefs’ all-time leader in touchdown passes. At 28 years old, he entered the game with 219 career touchdown passes, trailing Dawson’s 237.
Since becoming Kansas City’s starting quarterback in 2018, the 2017 first-round pick has earned two NFL MVP awards and led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories, also receiving Super Bowl MVP honors three times.
