The Denver Broncos have signed cornerback Patrick Surtain II to a four-year contract extension, as announced by the team on Wednesday.
Sources informed NFL Insider Jordan Schultz that the deal is valued at $96 million, making Surtain the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. The contract reportedly includes $77.5 million in guaranteed money.
Surtain’s new average annual salary surpasses that of Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield, who held the previous record with a four-year, $84.1-million deal signed in May.
PLAYER | AAV |

Antoine Winfield | $21.025M per year |
Jaire Alexander | $21M per year |
Surtain, drafted ninth overall in 2021, has established himself as a key player on the Broncos’ defense. He recorded four interceptions in his rookie season, including one returned for a touchdown, and has earned Pro Bowl honors for the past two seasons.
In 2022, Surtain was named to the All-Pro first team after registering two interceptions and a forced fumble. At 24 years old, he is expected to play a leading role in Denver’s defense, particularly after the offseason release of veteran safety Justin Simmons.
