The San Francisco 49ers are intensifying efforts to secure a long-term agreement with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.
According to sources, the possibility of Aiyuk returning to the 49ers seems increasingly likely. However, the situation regarding Aiyuk’s future remains fluid, with the Pittsburgh Steelers still in pursuit of the disgruntled wide receiver.
Since the beginning of training camp, Aiyuk’s status has been a significant topic of discussion. The 26-year-old has expressed frustration over the slow progress toward a long-term extension as he approaches the final year of his rookie contract, which is set to pay him $14.1 million in 2024.
In July, Aiyuk requested a trade after failing to reach an agreement on a new deal with the 49ers. While he reported to training camp, he has not participated in practices.
Commenting on the latest developments, Aiyuk took to Instagram, seemingly addressing the organization: “Niners be in the media everyday lol. It’s two options out there. Pick one and stop dropping reports simple.”
To facilitate a potential trade, the 49ers allowed Aiyuk to engage in discussions with other teams. Among those involved in negotiations were the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, and New England Patriots.
Reports indicate that Aiyuk declined a trade to the New England Patriots, which would have included a contract extension averaging around $32 million per year, as stated by The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
Although the 49ers and Patriots agreed on trade compensation, Aiyuk turned down the offer due to concerns over New England’s quarterback situation. The Patriots currently roster quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, Bailey Zappe, and Joe Milton, with Maye being selected third overall and Milton in the sixth round of the April draft.
Brissett is anticipated to start the season as New England’s quarterback. The 31-year-old has predominantly served as a backup throughout his career, throwing for 10,574 yards, 51 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions in 79 games, with 48 of those as a starter.
A $32 million-per-season contract would place Aiyuk alongside Philadelphia Eagles wideout A.J. Brown for the second-highest average annual value at the position, according to Over the Cap.
