The Minnesota Vikings and the Dallas Cowboys executed a trade on Friday involving two cornerbacks, Andrew Booth Jr. and Nahshon Wright. This exchange is viewed as a low-profile move, with both players possibly at risk of being cut before the end of training camp.
Andrew Booth Jr., who was drafted by the Vikings in the second round out of Clemson in 2022, has struggled to make a significant impact in the NFL. Booth’s rookie season was hampered by injuries, limiting him to just six games. Last season, Booth appeared in all 17 games, contributing in both defensive plays and on special teams, yet failed to record an interception during his tenure with Minnesota.
Nahshon Wright, selected by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Oregon State, also faced challenges in securing a consistent role. Over three seasons, Wright participated in 32 games, tallying one interception and five pass breakups. However, he was unable to solidify his position in Dallas’ defensive lineup, as DaRon Bland, drafted a year after Wright in the fifth round, surpassed him on the depth chart. Bland has since recorded 14 interceptions in 34 career games, including an NFL-record five interception returns for touchdowns in 2023.
The Vikings have been active in bolstering their secondary since the start of training camp, acquiring five defensive backs, including Wright. This comes as the team addresses its depth and experience concerns. Last week, Minnesota added veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau, and in recent weeks, they have signed safety Bobby McCain and cornerbacks Jacobi Francis and Duke Shelley.
This flurry of moves follows the tragic loss of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, who died in a car accident last month.
