Texas running back CJ Baxter has sustained a season-ending knee injury during practice on Tuesday and will need surgery, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Thamel reports that Baxter injured the LCL and PCL in his right knee.
Baxter, a sophomore, was anticipated to play a significant role in the Longhorns’ offense in 2024 after Jonathon Brooks left for the NFL. Last season, Baxter carried the ball 138 times as a freshman, accumulating 659 yards and five touchdowns. He also contributed 156 receiving yards, totaling 815 yards from scrimmage.
With Baxter sidelined, Jaydon Blue is expected to take on a larger role in the backfield. Blue rushed for 398 yards and three touchdowns on 65 carries last season. Behind Blue is Quintrevion Wisner, who had 12 rushing attempts for 73 yards and one touchdown in 2023.
