The San Francisco 49ers and receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has expressed dissatisfaction, are reportedly far from finalizing a long-term contract agreement. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero, as reported by NFL.com’s Nick Shook, a trade involving Aiyuk appears more probable than an extension with the 49ers. Several teams are reportedly interested in the second-team All-Pro wide receiver, although no trade has been finalized.
Aiyuk, entering the final year of his rookie contract, requested a trade from San Francisco on July 16. Teams began reaching out to the 49ers last month; however, general manager John Lynch has consistently stated that the team does not intend to trade the two-time 1,000-yard receiver. Nonetheless, recent discussions regarding a potential trade involving Aiyuk have taken place, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
Though Aiyuk reported to the 49ers’ training camp in July, he has not participated in practices due to stalled contract negotiations. Earlier in the offseason, San Francisco explored trade options for Aiyuk and fellow receiver Deebo Samuel but ultimately chose to retain both key players.
Potential trade destinations for Aiyuk include the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots. In June, Aiyuk mentioned that he could see himself playing for Pittsburgh or Washington if he were to leave San Francisco. New England has also been identified as one of the teams that inquired about Aiyuk earlier this year. Additionally, the Cleveland Browns emerged as a top suitor over the weekend, while the Steelers have once again been mentioned as a possible landing spot.
Last season, Aiyuk recorded 75 receptions for a career-high 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns over 16 games. The 2020 first-round pick achieved an impressive 17.9 yards per reception, ranking second among eligible receivers in the NFL for 2023.
With a projected salary of $14.1 million in 2024, Aiyuk’s market value stands at approximately $26.2 million per year, according to Spotrac.
