New York Jets pass-rusher Haason Reddick is holding out of training camp as he seeks a reworked contract, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The 29-year-old Reddick is scheduled to earn $14.25 million in base salary this season, the final year of a three-year, $45-million contract signed in 2022. Under the league’s collective bargaining agreement, Reddick will be fined $50,000 for each day he misses training camp. These fines are non-negotiable.
Reddick has been pursuing a new deal since his acquisition by the Jets in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 29, in exchange for a 2026 conditional third-round pick.
Selected in the first round of the 2017 draft, Reddick has skipped all phases of the Jets’ offseason workouts. At the time of the trade, the Jets were under the impression that Reddick would play out the final year of his contract, as reported by ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
Sources told SNY TV’s Connor Hughes that the Jets had offered Reddick a contract extension, including a raise for the current season, before finalizing the trade. However, Reddick declined the offer.
The Jets reportedly stated that they needed to evaluate his performance before committing to a significant pay increase. Nonetheless, they proposed adjustments to his existing contract, including incentives, as an interim measure.
Reddick reportedly agreed to this arrangement and committed to participating in the offseason program, minicamp, and training camp, according to Hughes. Now, the Jets are uncertain about his return and are not planning any further negotiations until he rejoins the team.
Reddick, a two-time Pro Bowler, has excelled as a pass-rusher, amassing 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons. He started his NFL career as an off-ball linebacker with the Arizona Cardinals.
When he returns, Reddick is expected to bolster a Jets defensive line that includes Quinnen Williams and Jermaine Johnson.
