Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love will not attend practice until he has agreed to terms on a new contract, general manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed on Monday, according to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.
Gutekunst acknowledged that major contract negotiations take time but expressed optimism that an extension for Love could be reached soon.
“I feel we’re close,” Gutekunst said.
Despite not practicing, Love has reported to training camp and is participating in team meetings.
The 2020 first-round pick had a breakout season in 2023, his first as the Packers’ starter following Aaron Rodgers’ departure. Love passed for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 64.2% completion rate. Additionally, he rushed for 247 yards and four touchdowns.
After finding his stride in the second half of last season, Love led Green Bay to a playoff berth and played a crucial role in the team’s wild-card round victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
The star quarterback is expected to command a significant raise ahead of the 2024 season. Currently, he is slated to make $10.5 million in 2024 but is projected to receive a salary with an annual average value of $50 million, similar to deals signed by Jared Goff and Trevor Lawrence this offseason.
Love is entering the final year of his current contract after agreeing to a one-year extension with the Packers in May 2023.
