Following an impressive showing at minicamp, Ladd McConkey has secured a significant deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
According to NFL Network sources, McConkey, drafted 34th overall, has inked a historic four-year contract with the Chargers, boasting the highest guaranteed money ever for that draft position. Surpassing Sam LaPorta’s previous year’s deal, McConkey’s agreement marks a new milestone.
Noteworthy NFL players previously selected at No. 34 include Christian Watson, Michael Pittman, and Donovan Smith, all notable names since 2010.
McConkey’s performance during spring workouts, particularly catching the eye of quarterback Justin Herbert, has positioned him as a key figure in the Chargers’ offensive plans. Expected to line up as the team’s second wide receiver alongside Quentin Johnston, McConkey is also slated for slot duties.
“He’s just picked up the offense so easily. It’s like he’s been a four or five-year vet,” Herbert commented via The Chargers Wire. “He understands the game, he understands leverage. He’s a smart player, he’s very athletic. He can beat man coverage, find the soft spot in zones.”
Impressing with his route-running skills, McConkey joins the Chargers after a college season where he logged 30 receptions for 478 yards and two touchdowns in nine games for Georgia. Hindered by recurring injuries, including ankle issues, back problems, turf toe, and knee tendinitis throughout 2022, McConkey concluded his collegiate career with 119 catches for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns over three seasons.
