Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins recently discussed the team’s surprising first-round draft pick, Michael Penix Jr., emphasizing the importance of unity and focus on winning.
Cousins, who signed a lucrative four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in March, addressed the situation on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast. He acknowledged initial confusion and frustration within his camp over the selection of Penix, a quarterback from Washington, with the No. 8 pick in the draft.
Expressing a pragmatic approach, Cousins emphasized the necessity of collective effort towards the team’s ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl, stating, “I don’t think it’s helpful. We’re trying to win a Super Bowl, and it’s hard enough. Let’s all be on the same page and try and go win a Super Bowl.”
Responding to inquiries about whether he would have still joined the Falcons had he known about their draft plans, Cousins avoided speculation, stating, “I don’t really deal in hypotheticals.”
Cousins acknowledged the reality of succession planning in the NFL, citing his prior experience with the Minnesota Vikings and their consideration of drafting a quarterback during his tenure.
Despite the initial controversy, Cousins extended a gesture of goodwill towards Penix, reaching out to congratulate him on his collegiate success and offering support as a resource for the rookie quarterback.
Following his Achilles tendon injury that ended his 2023 season, Cousins is now reportedly ready to participate in the Falcons’ offseason program, with coach Raheem Morris noting his progress towards full participation.
With OTAs underway and a new quarterback on board, Cousins remains focused on making the most of his opportunity with the Falcons and contributing to the team’s success on the field.
