Oklahoma is set to make a significant quarterback change following its first loss of the season. Head coach Brent Venables announced on Monday that freshman quarterback Michael Hawkins will take the starting role in Saturday’s game against Auburn, replacing Jackson Arnold, as reported by Brett McMurphy of Action Network.
Arnold was benched late in the second quarter during last week’s 25-15 defeat to Tennessee after a challenging first half. In relief, Hawkins completed 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards and one touchdown while also leading the team with 22 rushing yards.
Arnold, who joined the Sooners as the top dual-threat quarterback of the 2023 class, served as the backup to Dillon Gabriel last season. Following their loss, Oklahoma fell to No. 21 in the latest AP Poll. The Sooners, currently with a record of 3-1, will face No. 1 Texas after their matchup against Auburn.
