Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and his players will no longer field questions from The Denver Post’s Sean Keeler after the program cited “personal attacks” by the columnist, according to Matt Schubert of The Denver Post.
The CU athletic department and the football program have decided to exclude Keeler from football-related events, stating, “After a series of sustained personal attacks on the football program and specifically (Sanders), the CU athletic department, in conjunction with the football program, have decided not to take questions from Denver Post columnist Sean Keeler at football-related events,” as detailed in a school statement.
When The Denver Post requested examples of Keeler’s alleged personal attacks on Sanders, a school official referenced Keeler’s use of terms like “false prophet,” “Deposition Deion,” “Planet Prime,” and the “Bruce Lee of B.S.,” among others, according to Schubert.
Colorado officials did not comment on whether Sanders personally requested Keeler’s exclusion. Keeler will remain credentialed for Colorado’s practices and other football-related events and is permitted to cover other sports at the university without restriction.
Sanders’ contract with Colorado includes a clause requiring him to engage with “mutually agreed upon media.”
During a press conference on August 9, Sanders and Keeler had a public disagreement. Sanders asked, “You don’t like us, man. Why do you do this to yourself?” and questioned Keeler’s motivations, as reported by David Ubben of The Athletic. Keeler responded the next day, stating, “I’ve taken my swings at the pinata. Friday was Prime’s turn, and he didn’t miss. I had it coming, as the old song from ‘Chicago’ goes. That’s fine.”
Sanders will enter his second year as the Buffaloes’ head coach after a 4-8 season in 2023. Colorado will start its second stint as a Big 12 member against North Dakota State on August 29.
