Maddux Madsen has been named the starting quarterback for Boise State’s season opener against Georgia Southern, as announced by head coach Spencer Danielson on Sunday. Madsen secured the position over Malachi Nelson, a former five-star recruit who joined Boise State in January after transferring from USC.
Nelson, the top-ranked recruit in the nation for 2023, made the move to Boise State after spending one season at USC, where he attempted only three passes. Despite his high-profile status, Nelson was unable to surpass Madsen for the starting job.
Madsen, who appeared in nine games for the Broncos last season, was already well-acquainted with the team’s offensive system. He began the 2023 campaign as the backup quarterback but saw increased playing time as part of a two-quarterback system. Madsen’s season was cut short by an injury in November, but during his time on the field, he passed for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns, with three interceptions. Additionally, he contributed 120 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.
“I think very highly of both our quarterbacks, we have two really good quarterbacks,” Danielson stated. “Making this decision has been hard, but when I look at it throughout fall camp, Maddux gives us the better opportunity to win Game 1.”
Boise State’s 2024 season kicks off on August 31, followed by a key matchup against Oregon on September 7, one of the most anticipated games on their schedule.
