Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf is considering selling the team, according to a report by The Athletic’s Britt Ghiroli. Sources indicate that Reinsdorf has been in active talks with a group led by former MLB pitcher Dave Stewart. Reinsdorf has owned the White Sox since purchasing the team in 1981.
The potential sale comes after the White Sox endured a historically bad season in 2024, finishing with 121 losses, surpassing the 1962 New York Mets for the worst record in modern MLB history. In September, Reinsdorf acknowledged the struggles, stating, “Everyone in this organization is extremely unhappy with the results of this season, that goes without saying.”
The White Sox have not won a postseason series since their World Series victory in 2005.
Stewart’s group, known as Smoke34, previously attempted to acquire Oakland’s stake in the Oakland Coliseum. Stewart is also involved in efforts to bring a Major League Baseball expansion team to Nashville.
