Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz expressed surprise at the extent of his team’s struggles this season. Although he anticipated difficulties for the White Sox in 2024, the severity of their performance has exceeded his expectations.
As of Monday, the White Sox hold a 33-111 record and are on track to surpass the 1962 New York Mets’ record of 120 losses in a single season. “If you would have told me we were going to end up flirting with the record, I would have been a little surprised,” Getz said on Monday, according to MLB.com’s Scott Merkin. “Now if you would have told me prior to the year that we would have ended up with over 100 losses, 105, 110, I wouldn’t have been as surprised.”
Getz is in his first full season as general manager, having succeeded Rick Hahn, who was dismissed in August 2023. The White Sox are currently on pace to conclude the season with a record of 37-125. The 1899 Cleveland Spiders hold the MLB record for most losses in a season with 134.
