The St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers have finalized a three-team trade involving eight players, according to announcements made on Monday.
As part of the trade, the Cardinals are acquiring right-hander Erick Fedde from the White Sox and veteran outfielder Tommy Pham from Chicago. Additionally, St. Louis will receive cash considerations from the White Sox and a player to be named later from the Dodgers.
The Dodgers will receive utility player Tommy Edman from the Cardinals, right-handed reliever Michael Kopech from the White Sox, and Oliver Gonzalez from St. Louis.
In return, the White Sox are getting infielder Miguel Vargas, a player to be named later or cash considerations from the Dodgers, as well as infield prospects Jeral Perez and Alexander Albertus.
Fedde, who signed a two-year, $15 million contract with the White Sox after a standout season in the KBO in 2023, posted a 7-4 record with a 3.11 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 108 strikeouts in 121 2/3 innings for the MLB-worst White Sox this season. He will join a Cardinals rotation that includes Sonny Gray, Miles Mikolas, Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and Andre Pallante.
Fedde expressed his satisfaction with the move, stating, “I’m definitely happy for it to be done. It’s tough leaving a lot of my friends, but I already talked to a lot of people with the Cardinals, and it seems like they’re welcoming me with open arms, and I’m really excited to make a push for a deep run in October,” in a statement to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Pham returns to St. Louis after spending parts of five seasons with the team from 2014-18. The 36-year-old has recorded a .710 OPS, five home runs, 19 RBIs, and six stolen bases with the White Sox this season.
Edman, who has not played for the Cardinals in 2024 due to offseason wrist surgery, has made six hits in 29 at-bats during a Double-A rehab assignment. The 29-year-old, known for his versatility, has played all three outfield spots, shortstop, second base, and third base during his five-year MLB career. He is under contract for $9.5 million next season and is scheduled to reach free agency at the end of the 2025 campaign.
Kopech, who returned to the bullpen this season after struggling as a starter in 2023, has a 2-8 record with a 4.74 ERA, nine saves, and 59 strikeouts in 43 2/3 innings. He is arbitration-eligible for one more season and will hit free agency at the end of 2025.
Vargas, who has appeared at first base and left field this season, has three home runs, nine RBIs, and a .736 OPS in 71 at-bats.
Perez, a 19-year-old infielder, has had a strong season at Single-A, hitting 10 home runs with 42 RBIs and an .800 OPS in 75 games. He was ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 18 prospect by Baseball America.
Albertus, also 19, has played shortstop, second base, and third base this season. He is hitting .298 with three home runs and 42 RBIs across two minor-league levels. Albertus was ranked as the Dodgers’ No. 16 prospect by Baseball America.
