New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga left his first start of the season due to a left calf strain, the team announced on Friday.
Senga appeared to be in pain while holding his left leg after pursuing a pop-up in the sixth inning against the Atlanta Braves. The 31-year-old was making his 2024 season debut after missing the first half of the year due to a shoulder injury.
Before the injury, Senga was effective, giving up two runs on two hits, with one walk and nine strikeouts. He averaged 95.8 mph on his fastball and recorded 12 swinging strikes, including five with his signature forkball.
Senga is in the second year of a five-year, $75-million contract. He had a notable debut season in 2023, earning a spot in the All-Star Game and finishing as the runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year.
