The Baltimore Orioles have acquired right-handed pitcher Zach Eflin from the Tampa Bay Rays, the team announced Friday.
In exchange, the Rays will receive infielder Mac Horvath, right-handed pitcher Jackson Baumeister, and outfielder Matthew Etzel.
Eflin is set to earn $18 million next season, the final year of his three-year, $40 million contract. The 30-year-old has posted a 5-7 record with a 4.09 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts across 110 innings in 2024.
Eflin will join an Orioles pitching staff that has been operating with a four-man rotation. He will slot in alongside Corbin Burnes, Grayson Rodriguez, Dean Kremer, and Albert Suárez.
Horvath, a third baseman, was ranked as Baltimore’s No. 13 prospect by Baseball America. The 23-year-old has recorded nine home runs, 41 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases in 71 games at High-A this season.
Baumeister, ranked No. 18 in Baltimore’s system by Baseball America, is 1-3 with a 3.06 ERA and 91 strikeouts across 70 2/3 innings at High-A this season.
Etzel, a 10th-round pick by the Orioles in 2023, has hit .289 with six home runs, 47 RBIs, and 41 stolen bases at Double-A this season.
