Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies will be out for eight weeks due to a left wrist fracture, the team announced on Sunday.
Albies sustained the injury during Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. In the ninth inning, he hurt his wrist while attempting to prevent a stolen base. The incident occurred when Albies awkwardly bent his wrist while catching a throw from the catcher to tag the baserunner. He immediately discarded his glove and crouched in pain.
Braves manager Brian Snitker confirmed after the game that the injury was serious, stating, “not good,” and announced that the 27-year-old would be placed on the injured list, according to David O’Brien of The Athletic.
To fill the void left by Albies, Atlanta is expected to call up Nacho Alvarez Jr., as reported by Mark Bowman of MLB.com.
Despite recording two hits in the game, Albies is experiencing a challenging season. He currently holds a .258/.310/.407 slash line, a drop from his career-best performance in 2023.
