The ongoing rivalry between the PGA TOUR and LIV Golf is set to intensify this December when Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy take on Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a televised event.
Rory McIlroy shared his excitement about the upcoming matchup, telling Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch, “I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December.”
The made-for-TV competition, scheduled to air on TNT in mid-December, is expected to draw significant attention as some of golf’s biggest names face off. While no prize money will be awarded, the players will receive appearance fees, according to Lynch’s report. The event may or may not be linked to “The Match” series, which previously held four events in Las Vegas.
The face-off comes at a time of heightened tension between the PGA TOUR and LIV Golf, with McIlroy playing a key role in the negotiations involving the PGA TOUR and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), which finances LIV Golf.
In a notable encounter earlier this year, DeChambeau narrowly defeated McIlroy by one stroke to secure his second U.S. Open title, following a late stumble by McIlroy.
Scottie Scheffler, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the world after winning the TOUR Championship and securing a $25 million payout for claiming the FedEx Cup playoffs, will join McIlroy for this highly anticipated event. Representatives for DeChambeau and Koepka have also confirmed their participation.
The exact format of the December match and further details are yet to be disclosed.
