UEFA has appointed French referee François Letexier to officiate the European Championship final between Spain and England. At 35 years old, Letexier is among the youngest to lead a major final, scheduled for Sunday at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.
Letexier has officiated three matches at Euro 2024, notably overseeing Spain’s 4-1 victory over Georgia in the round of 16. Throughout these games, he issued a total of 10 yellow cards and notably penalized Serbia’s Aleksandar Mitrovic for simulation during a 0-0 draw with Denmark.
There were no controversies involving video review in Letexier’s matches, including the 2-2 draw between Albania and Croatia. The VAR specialist for the final will also be French, Jérôme Brisard.
Known for his restraint in issuing red cards, Letexier has only shown one in his last nine UEFA games, given to Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano during last season’s Champions League and Europa League matches. His notable UEFA assignments this season include overseeing Real Madrid’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals and Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 victory over Roma in the Europa League semifinals.
Letexier joined FIFA’s list of international referees seven years ago. Szymon Marciniak of Poland, who officiated the 2022 World Cup final and 2023 Champions League final, will serve as the fourth official for the Euro 2024 final.
