Five individuals sustained minor injuries in Dortmund before Wednesday’s Euro 2024 semi-final when Netherlands supporters reportedly attacked England fans, UK police confirmed.
According to authorities, a group of Netherlands fans assaulted England supporters in bars and attempted to steal flags. While most Netherlands fans were present to “enjoy the game,” there were identified risk groups among them.
UK police collaborated with local authorities in Germany for the match, which saw England secure a 2-1 victory.
A video circulated on social media depicted fans throwing chairs toward a bar, with one individual in a Dutch football shirt visible. The situation escalated with objects thrown both into and from the bar, prompting patrons to seek shelter inside.
Leo, a bar employee, recounted the incident to the BBC, stating, “At first it was two or three people. I tried to separate them but then it got too heated and everything flew around. It’s really upsetting.” The bar’s television was damaged during the altercation, preventing them from broadcasting the game.
In a statement, the UK Football Policing Unit addressed the disorder, noting reports of Dutch fans attacking England fans and attempting flag theft. They acknowledged the large presence of Netherlands fans, with a notable contingent categorized as risk supporters.
The Dutch Football Association indicated that 110,000 Netherlands fans traveled to Dortmund, outnumbering the 40,000 England supporters present.
England secured their spot in the final with a last-minute goal from Ollie Watkins and will face Spain in Berlin on Sunday.
