James Maddison will not be part of England’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024. The Tottenham midfielder was initially included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man selection.
Maddison appeared in England’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday, coming off the bench in the 3-0 victory at St James’ Park. However, he is among the seven players who will be omitted when the final squad is announced on Saturday.
The 27-year-old has earned seven senior England caps and was included in Southgate’s squad for the 2022 World Cup, although he did not play in Qatar.
After joining Tottenham in a £40 million move from Leicester last summer, Maddison had an inconsistent season. He started strongly but his momentum was hampered by injuries.
Now, he finds himself excluded from the England squad that will head to Germany for Euro 2024. Southgate still needs to cut six more players from the team.
The final squad for the tournament will be revealed on Saturday, following England’s last warm-up match against Iceland at Wembley the previous night.
One player still in contention is Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, who returned to training on Wednesday after a long injury lay-off.
