Nicolò Fagioli has been named in Italy’s provisional squad for the Euro 2024, marking his return after serving a seven-month ban for betting violations.
Manager Luciano Spalletti unveiled a 30-man squad on Thursday as Italy gears up to defend its Euro title.
Fagioli, who plays for Juventus, was sidelined in October due to his involvement in betting activities and subsequently underwent treatment for gambling addiction. Despite the setback, the midfielder made a comeback as a substitute in Juventus’ recent 3-3 draw against Bologna.
Prior to his suspension, Fagioli featured in six out of eight Serie A matches for Juventus, earning recognition as one of Italy’s promising young midfield talents.
Although Fagioli had made a solitary appearance for Italy in November 2022, his inclusion comes as a significant step in his redemption journey.
Notably absent from the squad is Fagioli’s Juventus teammate Manuel Locatelli, a member of Italy’s Euro 2020-winning squad.
Riccardo Calafiori, following an impressive season with Bologna, has earned his first call-up to the national team. The defender played a pivotal role in Bologna’s historic qualification for the Champions League.
Joining the ranks of debutants are Torino defender Raoul Bellanova and Hellas Verona midfielder Michael Folorunsho, who have been rewarded with their maiden call-ups after catching the eye during March friendlies.
Gianluca Scamacca, who showcased stellar form with Atalanta in the Europa League, has been reinstated to the squad following his omission from previous friendly matches.
However, veteran striker Ciro Immobile has been omitted from the squad. Despite his prolific performances for Lazio, the 34-year-old has failed to replicate the same level of success with the national team.
With the squad announcement, the focus now shifts to finalizing the team, with four players set to be axed from the roster by June 6. The European Championship commences on June 14 in Germany, with Italy kicking off their title defense against Albania in Dortmund the following day. Group B also features Spain and Croatia.
Italy’s preparations include warm-up fixtures against Turkey on June 4 and Bosnia-Herzegovina five days later before departing for Germany.
