Cristiano Ronaldo is set to compete in his 11th major international tournament, having been included in Portugal’s squad for Euro 2024.
The 39-year-old forward, currently playing for Al-Nassr, holds the record for the most international caps in football history, with 206 appearances and 128 goals for Portugal.
Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez has listed Ronaldo as one of seven forwards in his 26-man squad for next month’s tournament in Germany. Martinez stated at a news conference that Ronaldo continues to provide “a quality in front of goal which we greatly appreciate and which we need.”
Ronaldo made his tournament debut at Euro 2004, where Portugal reached the final but were defeated by Greece. He played a crucial role in Portugal’s Euro 2016 victory, their first major international trophy, and also contributed to winning the Nations League in 2018–19.
The squad includes nine players from Premier League clubs, with Wolves’ Jose Sa, Nelson Semedo, and Pedro Neto all selected. Also included are Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias, Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, and Liverpool’s Diogo Jota.
Veteran defender Pepe, 41, has also been chosen, along with his 21-year-old Porto teammate Francisco Conceicao. Conceicao, the son of former Portugal international Sergio Conceicao, earned his first senior cap against Slovenia in March.
Portugal will begin their Euro 2024 campaign in Group F, facing the Czech Republic on June 18, followed by matches against Turkey and Georgia.
