Manchester United’s Luke Shaw faces a significant challenge to participate in Euro 2024 following revelations from manager Erik ten Hag indicating his struggles to recover in time for the FA Cup final.
The 28-year-old left-back has endured a season marred by injuries, managing just 15 appearances, with his last game occurring three months ago in a match against Luton.
Initially anticipated to return in early May, Shaw’s participation in the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25 now appears improbable.
With England manager Gareth Southgate poised to announce his provisional Euro 2024 squad shortly after the final, Shaw confronts a race against time to demonstrate his fitness for the tournament.
Ten Hag disclosed that Shaw, who had been expected to recover in early May, suffered a setback in his rehabilitation, casting further doubt on his availability.
When questioned about Shaw and Harry Maguire’s fitness for the Euro 2024 and FA Cup final, Ten Hag stated, “For England, I cannot confirm their availability. Regarding the cup final, we are optimistic about Harry Maguire’s chances of participation. However, Luke’s situation is more complex. At present, the likelihood of his inclusion is diminished due to the setback he encountered in his recovery process.”
England’s preparation for Euro 2024 includes friendly matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland on June 7, leading up to their opening fixture against Serbia on June 16 in Germany.
