Luton, adjusting to life in the Championship after their Premier League season, faced challenges, with Romaine Mundle scoring a stunning strike in the 66th minute. Chris Rigg opened the scoring for Sunderland early in the second half, only for Elijah Adebayo to equalize shortly after.
Burnley needed a late equalizer from Zian Flemming to salvage a point against Hull. Xavier Simons had given Hull the lead with a deflected strike just before halftime, marking the first goal Burnley conceded in 453 minutes.
Sheffield United fell six points off the top after losing 1-0 at Middlesbrough, where Emmanuel Latte Lath scored a late header in the 80th minute to secure Middlesbrough’s first win in three matches.
West Brom climbed above Sheffield United into fourth place, having drawn 0-0 with Blackburn. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth continued to struggle, remaining winless on the road this season after a 1-0 defeat at Millwall, where 19-year-old winger Romain Esse scored the only goal in the first half.
