Bayern Munich and Harry Kane made history on Tuesday with a record-breaking performance in their opening match of the 2024-25 Champions League season. The German side defeated Dinamo Zagreb 9-2, with Kane scoring four goals.
Kane’s performance saw him surpass Wayne Rooney to become the highest-scoring Englishman in Champions League history. Kane now has 33 career goals in the competition, surpassing Rooney’s record by three.
In the match, Kane converted three penalties, increasing his tally to 53 goals in 50 games since joining Bayern Munich. Kane commented on his achievement, “An amazing game – a bit of a crazy game. It’s the first time I’ve scored three (penalties) in a game. That doesn’t happen at all really. I practice my penalties, I have a good routine, but to be honest, I didn’t really know what to do for the third one. But thankfully I was able to put it away.”
Bayern Munich also set a new record by becoming the first team in the Champions League era to score nine goals in a single match. Previously, several teams, including Bayern, had scored eight goals in a game.
The victory propelled Bayern Munich to the top of the new 36-team Champions League table. The team has maintained a perfect start to the season, winning all three of its league matches.
In addition to Kane, Bayern Munich’s Raphael Guerreiro, Michael Olise, Leroy Sane, and Leon Goretzka also scored. Goretzka’s goal in the 92nd minute established the record for Bayern Munich.
Dinamo Zagreb managed to score twice in quick succession during the second half, narrowing the deficit to 3-2. However, Bayern Munich responded strongly, securing the impressive win.
Thomas Muller made his 152nd Champions League appearance during the match, setting a new record for the most appearances for a single club, surpassing Barcelona legend Xavi.
