Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele were instrumental in France’s 2-0 victory over Belgium in the UEFA Nations League on Monday, providing the goals that helped France rebound from a recent home defeat to Italy.
The French squad was not at full strength, as captain Kylian Mbappe was among the eight changes made by coach Didier Deschamps. France had lost 3-1 to Italy in Paris on Friday, despite taking an early lead within 13 seconds. Belgium, meanwhile, came into this match on the back of a 3-1 win against Israel.
The match in Lyon mirrored their Euro 2024 last-16 clash, which France won 1-0 in Dusseldorf thanks to a late own goal. On Monday, France took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Kolo Muani scored after Dembele’s shot was initially saved by Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels.
Belgium, led by captain Kevin De Bruyne, failed to equalize. France extended their lead on 57 minutes with a goal from Dembele, who cut in from the right wing and scored with a left-footed shot.
In the second half, France made substitutions including Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and Michael Olise, as they managed to secure the win. This result provides a confidence boost following their loss to Italy.
Italy currently leads Group A2 with six points from two matches after defeating Israel 2-1 on Monday. France and Belgium both have three points, while Israel is yet to earn a point.
Upcoming matches in October include Italy facing Belgium in Rome and Israel playing against France in Budapest.
