Arne Slot marked a successful debut in a major test as Liverpool manager with a commanding 3-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday. Luis Diaz scored twice, and Mohamed Salah added another goal, maintaining Liverpool’s perfect start under Slot.
Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp, has won all three Premier League matches so far, placing Liverpool alongside Manchester City at the top of the table. “I think everything you want to see as a manager you saw in this game,” said Slot.
Manchester United, led by Erik ten Hag, suffered their second consecutive defeat of the season. Ten Hag is under increasing pressure after overseeing the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish of eighth last season. Despite a surprise FA Cup win over Manchester City, which secured his position, and significant investment in new players, United’s issues persist.
Casemiro’s poor performance was notable, with the Brazilian at fault for both of Diaz’s goals and subsequently substituted at halftime for Toby Collyer. United’s new £42-million signing, Manuel Ugarte, was introduced before the match, but the team will need his impact to bolster their midfield.
Liverpool, on the other hand, chose not to sign a defensive midfielder, and Slot’s decision to reposition Ryan Gravenberch has so far been effective. Liverpool’s victory was particularly decisive, with the team failing to convert additional chances to replicate their 5-0 win over United in 2021.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s initial goal was ruled out due to an offside infraction involving Salah. Casemiro, who had shown improvement in earlier matches, struggled during this game, with Diaz capitalizing on a mistake to score Liverpool’s first goal. Diaz netted again shortly before halftime after being set up by Salah.
Salah added Liverpool’s third goal in the 56th minute, marking his 15th goal in 16 appearances against United. With less than a year remaining on his contract, Salah hinted this could be his final season with Liverpool. “I was coming to the game, (thinking) it could be the last time (playing at Old Trafford),” Salah told Sky Sports.
Despite speculation that Arsenal may challenge Manchester City for the title, Liverpool’s strong early performances suggest they remain serious contenders even in Klopp’s absence.
