Juventus have secured Netherlands midfielder Teun Koopmeiners from Atalanta in a transfer deal valued at up to 60.7 million euros ($67.5 million), Serie A’s top club confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Juve’s statement, they have agreed to a base fee of “51.3 million euros, payable over four financial years, with additional costs up to 3.4 million euros.” Juventus will also pay Atalanta an extra six million euros “upon the achievement of further performance objectives.” Koopmeiners has signed a five-year contract with a reported annual salary of 4.5 million euros.
This transfer marks the most significant deal of the Italian summer window, surpassing the 51.5 million euros Juventus agreed to pay for Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa. Koopmeiners’ move concludes the most notable transfer saga of the summer, as the 26-year-old midfielder had been eager to leave Atalanta.
Koopmeiners was omitted from Atalanta’s squad for the season’s initial matches after reportedly submitting medical notes for stress. Initially, the club resisted selling him to Juventus. However, an agreement was eventually reached, allowing Juve to add a new player to their roster under new coach Thiago Motta. The “Old Lady” of Italian football is undergoing a significant transformation.
Last season, Koopmeiners was among Serie A’s standout performers, netting 15 goals across all competitions as Atalanta secured their first major trophy since 1963. Juventus are currently leading Serie A after winning their first two games against Como and Verona, with their next match against Roma on Sunday.
Following the Koopmeiners transfer, Atalanta announced the signing of Ivory Coast international Odilon Kossounou on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, with an option to buy. Reports indicate that Atalanta will pay 5.5 million euros for the season-long loan, with the possibility of making the transfer permanent for 25 million euros.
