Ilkay Gundogan is being given the opportunity to explore options to leave Barcelona this summer.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City on a free transfer last summer, has only completed one full season with the Catalan club. Despite having two years remaining on his contract, Barcelona has indicated they will not obstruct any potential transfer if Gundogan finds a suitable offer.
Interest in Gundogan has emerged from clubs in England, Spain, and Saudi Arabia. During the previous season, Gundogan made 51 appearances in all competitions as Barcelona finished second in La Liga.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick addressed the speculation surrounding Gundogan after the midfielder missed the team’s season-opening victory against Valencia due to concussion. Flick, who managed Gundogan with the Germany national team, stated: “I know him very well. I appreciate the player and the person he is. We spoke about everything, but it will stay between us. It’s not for you to know. I have a feeling he will stay.”
Although Flick is interested in retaining Gundogan, the decision may be affected by Barcelona’s complicated financial situation. The club has reportedly been unable to register their new £51 million signing, Dani Olmo, due to the Spanish league’s squad cost control regulations.
Barcelona is also considering selling striker Vitor Roque before the transfer deadline. Additionally, the club has recently announced the departure of captain Sergi Roberto, and full-back Julian Araujo moved to Bournemouth last week.
In related news, Gundogan has announced his retirement from international football. Having made his debut for Germany in 2011, he earned 82 caps and captained the team during this summer’s European Championship. Gundogan described the tournament as a “highlight,” but noted, “Even before the tournament, I felt a certain tiredness in my body and also in my head, which got me thinking. And the games at club and national level are not getting any less.”
