Caretaker England men’s manager Lee Carsley expressed his aim to help the Three Lions take the “next step” in their quest to secure a major trophy after a 60-year wait. Carsley was promoted from his role as England Under-21 manager to temporarily lead the senior team following Gareth Southgate’s resignation.
Southgate stepped down from his position as England manager after eight years in charge. His departure came after England lost the Euro 2024 final to Spain, marking their second consecutive defeat in the European Championship finals. This loss extended England’s search for their first major trophy since their 1966 World Cup victory.
Carsley, who was previously the Under-21 manager, will oversee the upcoming Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September. He is also expected to lead England in additional Nations League fixtures later in 2024.
Carsley, who guided the Under-21s to European Championship success last year, will announce his squad for the September matches on August 29. He highlighted the progress and quality of England’s players, stating, “I think we’ve got some outstanding players in the senior team and in the pathway. I think the level of player over the last few years has really improved.”
Carsley acknowledged the achievements of Southgate and his staff, noting that reaching back-to-back finals is a significant accomplishment. He emphasized that the ultimate goal is to secure a win, adding, “The next step is winning, and that’s got to be the objective.” Carsley remains optimistic about the team’s potential to achieve this goal.
