Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has extended his contract with the club until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. The Portugal midfielder, who joined United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, has made 234 appearances, scoring 79 goals and providing 67 assists.
Fernandes’ previous contract, signed in 2022, was set to expire in 2026. He succeeded Harry Maguire as Manchester United’s club captain in July 2023.
Fernandes commented on his new contract, saying, “Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United. I can see how positive the future is going to be and I am relishing leading this team forward.” He added, “I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt, and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.”
Despite criticism from former United players Gary Neville and Roy Keane, United manager Erik ten Hag has continued to support Fernandes. Fernandes noted that he “wouldn’t have signed this contract” if he did not believe his “best moments in a United shirt are still to come.”
Reflecting on his time at the club, Fernandes mentioned his memorable moments, including scoring a hat-trick against Leeds and leading the team at Old Trafford during European nights. He expressed optimism about the club’s future, stating, “From my discussions with the football leadership and manager, it is clear how determined everyone is to fight for major trophies in the years ahead.”
Fernandes was not listed among the ‘untouchables’ for potential summer transfers, though a sale would have depended on an offer deemed impossible to refuse, which did not materialize. Before the FA Cup final in May, Fernandes had expressed a desire for his expectations to align with those of the club.
Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth praised Fernandes as a “brilliant leader,” highlighting his consistent performance and dedication. Ashworth said, “Bruno has performed at such a high level with remarkable consistency since he arrived at Manchester United. Bruno’s dedication to the club epitomises what it takes to be a United player. He remains pivotal to everything that we want to achieve here, and we look forward to working together to deliver the success that this club demands.”
