Paris St-Germain have finalized the signing of Benfica midfielder Joao Neves for an initial fee of £50 million, with potential add-ons that could bring the total to £60 million.
The 19-year-old Portugal international, who has been linked with Manchester United, has signed a five-year contract with the French champions.
Neves broke into the Benfica first team in January last year, quickly becoming a crucial player for the club. During his time at Benfica, he made 75 appearances across all competitions and scored four goals.
The Portuguese club confirmed the initial transfer fee, which could increase with various performance-related add-ons.
Neves joins PSG as the club looks to transition following the departure of star forward Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid this summer.
“Joao is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally,” said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. “He was so passionate to join Paris St-Germain and determined to fight for the jersey – which is what we expect of all our players.”
Neves has earned nine caps for Portugal and played twice for the national team during this summer’s European Championship in Germany, where he contributed to the team’s advancement to the quarter-finals.
“I’m very proud to be joining Paris St-Germain, a very ambitious club,” Neves stated. “I’m going to give my all to help my team-mates, to grow at this fantastic club and to win numerous titles.”
