Chelsea has secured the signing of goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal for a fee of £20.7 million on a seven-year contract.
The 22-year-old Dane made 37 appearances for Villarreal last season, establishing himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. Jorgensen expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “This move is a dream come true. I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new team-mates.”
Jorgensen will compete for Chelsea’s starting goalkeeper position with Robert Sanchez. Born in Sweden, he represented the country at the youth level before switching his allegiance to Denmark Under-21s, qualifying through his paternal heritage.
He joined Villarreal at the age of 15 and progressed through the club’s youth system, making his senior debut for the B side in October 2020. Jorgensen made his La Liga debut in January 2023.
Currently, he has traveled to the United States to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour. The Blues have three matches remaining, providing Jorgensen the opportunity to potentially feature against Club America, Manchester City, or Real Madrid before returning home next week.
Chelsea’s Premier League campaign kicks off at home against champions Manchester City on Sunday, 18 August, at 16:30 BST.
