Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez will not participate in Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game in Columbus, Ohio. Messi suffered an ankle injury during the Copa America final on July 14. He was seen wearing a protective boot during a ceremony recognizing his 45 career titles before Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire on Saturday. Suarez, who started that match, had previously come off the bench in Inter Miami’s 3-1 win over Toronto FC three days prior.
Inter Miami stated, “Leo Messi will miss the All-Star Game due to an ankle injury, while Luis Suarez, who recently returned from international duty after over 40 days away from the club, will miss the All-Star Game due to knee discomfort.” The statement, provided by Miami Herald reporter Michelle Kaufman, also mentioned that their availability for Saturday’s League’s Cup match would be evaluated based on their daily recovery.
Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are expected to play in the All-Star Game, which will feature top MLS players against All-Stars from Mexico’s Liga MX.
Messi’s absence from key matches has been disappointing for fans who purchased tickets at inflated prices from third-party sellers. He has missed six games this season and 12 since joining Inter Miami in July 2023.
The Chicago Fire announced they will offer vouchers to ticket holders if Messi is not available for Inter Miami’s visit to Soldier Field on August 31.
Messi has yet to play at Lower.com Field, the home of the Columbus Crew and the venue for the 2024 MLS All-Star Game. Inter Miami is scheduled to play against the Crew in Columbus on October 2.
