Marseille have completed the signing of forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United on a contract lasting until 2029, in a deal valued at up to €31.6 million (£26.6 million).
Greenwood, 22, came through Manchester United’s youth academy but has not featured for the club since January 2022. He spent the previous season on loan at Getafe.
Charges against Greenwood, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.
The move to Marseille faced criticism from the Marseille mayor following the announcement of the signing.
Greenwood made his competitive debut for Manchester United in 2019 as a substitute in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. During his time at United, he scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned one cap for England in 2020.
In August 2023, Manchester United announced that Greenwood would leave the club by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.
Following his departure from United, Greenwood joined La Liga side Getafe in September 2023. At Getafe, he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances, helping to revive his career.
Manchester United, who have included a significant sell-on clause in their agreement with Marseille, wished Greenwood well on their official website.
Marseille are scheduled to face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on August 3 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade, as the Stadium of Light is undergoing renovation.
Greenwood, originally from Bradford, could make his first appearance back in England since his arrest in January 2022, following allegations related to material published online.
