Manchester United has extended Erik ten Hag’s contract by triggering a one-year extension, keeping him at the club until 2026. The Dutchman, who joined from Ajax in 2022, was initially contracted until 2025.
Ten Hag, 54, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am very pleased to have reached agreement with the club to continue working together.” He reflected on the past two years, highlighting achievements including two trophies and notable progress.
Under Ten Hag, United secured third place in the Premier League and ended a six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup in his first season. However, the second season proved challenging with an eighth-place league finish and an early Champions League exit. The FA Cup final victory against Manchester City secured Ten Hag’s position.
Following a review of the team’s performance last season under co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s oversight, United considered potential replacements for Ten Hag but ultimately decided to retain him, aiming to strengthen the club’s football leadership structure.
Sporting director Dan Ashworth emphasized the team’s potential, stating, “This group has shown they can compete at the top level; now, consistency is key.” United is negotiating with Ten Hag to reshape his coaching staff, including the anticipated return of former player Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake.
Christopher Vivell, formerly of Chelsea, joins as director of global talent on a short-term basis to assist during the current transfer window.
